Scranton students picked up a lot of awards at the recent SW Regional Science & Engineering Fair held March 14 at the Gateway to Science in Bismarck.

The event brought elementary, middle school and high school students from all over the western part of the state.

The top finishers in the competition qualify to move on to state wide competition, with the winners there advancing to the national competition.

The competition is set up in three divisions – Junior, Senior and Elementary.

The sixth – eighth grade students compete in the Junior Division individually or as part of a team, while the ninth through 12 grade have slightly different guidelines.

The research projects are studies conducted by people who want to learn more about their world or find a solution to a problem. Research projects can be conducted in all areas of STEM and can be conducted by both junior high and high school students.

The students are required to choose an area of study, then find something specific to test in the STEM field. Then they are asked to plan how to test an hypothesis, then test it, analyze it and present the research.

The elementary division of the science fair is designed to inspire kids to explore science and start learning about STEM and the scientific method, while also learning how to communicate about their experiments and findings.

According to Garret Roemmich, the science teacher at Scranton Public School, local students picked up a lot of awards.

“I am very proud of all participants in this year’s Science and Engineering Fair. All did very well and represented our school very well. Congrats to all students on their performance and I am looking forward to the competition at state hosted at UND,” he said.

The state competition will be held March 30-31 in Grand Forks at the University of North Dakota. The International Science and Engineering Fair, which starts May 13, will be held in Dallas (Texas).

Roemmich said Karady Evans won Best Board Design, ND Stem Ambassador, and won the High School Behavioral and Social Science category.

Chason Schumacher won the Spark Award. Caden Anderson won the High School Navy Award, while Zander Evans won the Junior High Navy Award.

Landon Eaton won the South West Grain Award.

Layla Krinke won the Red River Valley Excellence in Chemistry, while Dani Maychrzak won the ND Farmers Union Award.

Mardi Loder won the Water Quality Works Award and the Stockholm Water Award and Romana Eaton won the Junior High Animal Science Category.

Chloe Maychrzak won the Junior High Behavioral and Social Science category.

Layla Krinke, Chloe Maychzrak, Romana Eaton, and Zander Evans all won 2023 Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge Award, Roemmich added.
